Title: Is it possible to become a node like the bitcoin network but for groestlcoin

Well the subject says it all! I have lots of bandwidth download and upload so would like to contribute this way.

Ofcourse this is possible!
It increases the speed of the whole network and keeps it decentralized.
All you have to do is download the qt wallet (groestlcoin-qt or groestlcoind) and leave it running. Also open TCP port 1331 (as in port forward this to the qt wallet and don't use uPnP)
